Save your experience for later instead of carrying it around and risking it all.

XP Bottling lets you turn some of your experience into Bottles o’ Enchanting. You can store those bottles in a chest, carry them safely, trade them with another player, or use them later when you need XP for enchanting, repairing gear, or using an anvil.

Why use XP Bottling?

Normally, the experience you carry disappears when you die, apart from the small amount Minecraft drops afterward. Bottling some of it gives you a safer way to save XP before exploring, fighting a boss, mining in a dangerous area, or visiting the Nether or End.

It is especially useful when:

  • You have more XP than you currently need
  • You are about to go somewhere dangerous
  • You want to save XP for future enchantments or repairs
  • You want to share or trade XP with another player
  • You want to keep an emergency supply near your base

What you need

You only need:

  • At least one empty glass bottle
  • Some experience
  • An enchanting table

A regular empty glass bottle works. You do not need a water bottle or potion.

How to bottle your XP

  1. Hold an empty glass bottle in your hand.
  2. Stand close to an enchanting table.
  3. Look directly at the enchanting table.
  4. Right-click the table with the glass bottle.

When it works, you will hear a bottle-filling sound and receive a Bottle o’ Enchanting.

Each bottle costs:

  • One empty glass bottle
  • 12 experience points

That means 12 raw XP points, not 12 full experience levels.

Your displayed level may move slightly, especially at lower levels, because Minecraft levels require different amounts of XP as you progress.

How to use bottled XP

Hold the Bottle o’ Enchanting and throw it at the ground nearby.

The bottle will break and release experience orbs that you can collect.

Minecraft Bottles o’ Enchanting release a somewhat variable amount of XP, so you may not always receive exactly the same number of points that were used to create the bottle. Think of bottling as convenient XP storage, not a perfectly lossless bank account.

Helpful tips

Bottle XP before leaving for a dangerous trip. A few seconds at an enchanting table can protect a large portion of the experience you worked to earn.

Keep spare glass bottles beside your enchanting setup so they are ready when you need them.

Store XP bottles in a secure chest, shulker box, or player vault.

You can give XP bottles to another player, making them useful for helping new players or trading.

Do not rapidly click the enchanting table without checking your XP. The system can create several bottles as long as you have bottles and enough experience.
